This is a new site that I will be developing in greater detail over the next few months. This first phase gives you a brief introduction to the work that I have completed over the last several years as I led an architectural practice focused on historic preservation. My work has included planning, architecture and historic preservation as best illustrated by the projects listed below.

From this portfolio, however, I have learned that the term historic preservation has a limiting connotation. In my consulting practice I am moving away from the limits of “bricks and mortar” and into the broader areas of planning, research and writing. Whereas buildings are testaments to the stories of people’s lives, the actual telling of the stories of those lives, through both physical and archival research may be the more fascinating part of the puzzle.

Fort Morgan, Alabama – Master Plan for the reuse and renovation of 500-acre historic site on the Gulf of Mexico, consultant to SmithGroup, estimated completion, January 2005.

I-94 Rehabilitation Study, Detroit, Michigan – facilitation of Section 106 process, consultant to SmithGroup, estimated completion 2004.

Conservation Assessment Program – architectural assessor to small historic museums around the Midwest since 1992.

R. J. DeLonis Center, Ann Arbor, Michigan – facilitation of public process for design of new shelter for homeless adults, building completed November, 2003.

St. Luke’s Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio – architectural feasibility for conversion of 1930’s hospital into housing, study completed in 2002.

Architects Building, Detroit, MI – conversion of 1928 office building into low-income housing, schematic design completed in 1995.

Schlenker Building, Ann Arbor, Michigan – restoration of historic hardware store and addition of 15,000 of new office space, completed 2000.

Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, Grand Rapids, Michigan – conversion of 1911 auto dealership into multi-purpose arts center, completed 1997.

Crazy Wisdom Bookstore, Ann Arbor, Michigan – renovation of downtown building into two-story alternative bookstore, completed 1997.

Consumers Energy Headquarters, Jackson, Michigan – reuse of historic post office as entrance to new high-rise office tower, completed 2002.

Michigan State Capitol, Lansing, Michigan – restoration of Senate spaces and Ground Floor Corridors, complete 1992.

Borders Books and Music, Nationwide – established of “kit of parts” for expansion program, 1989 through 1992.

Greenfield Village at the Henry Ford, Dearborn, Michigan – completion of numerous restorations at outdoor museum, 1984-1994.

SOS Channel Lights, Michigan – preservation plan for restoration of two Range Lights, plan completed in 2001.

McGuffey Museum, Oxford, Ohio – Historic Structure Report and implementation of Master Plan for restoration and addition to Wm. Holmes McGuffey’s original homestead, 2000.
